Spelling Lists

National literacy and numeracy strategies exist to raise the standard among primary aged children, and as part of their recommendations there are Key Stage-specific spelling lists for KS1 and KS2. Regardless of how these are included in the curriculum, having these spelling lists close to hand can help encourage pupils to challenge themselves more frequently as well as serve as a reminder for parents.

Whether learning a first or second language, being able to spell and understand the basic conventions of vocabulary can prove to be a strong asset. It also provides the foundations that pupils will then find useful as they progress to secondary school and find that a good understanding of spelling helps them to better understand a variety of subjects. A child’s literacy development is most effective when it has strong foundations on which to build, which is why we have KS1 and KS2 recommended spelling lists available in our online library.

As well as providing a solid springboard into other subject areas and basic comprehension, being able to identify words according to their spelling is also an important aspect of learning how to read; a lifelong skill that more often than not becomes something that we do on a daily basis.
