Stephen’s Story: An inspiration to many young people across the UK, Stephen Lawrence was an ambitious and hardworking individual who always wanted to have a positive impact on the community. His dreams were tragically cut short in an unprovoked racist attack on the 22nd April 1993 at the age of 18.

Stephen left behind a strong message of hope and community. Changing many attitudes towards racism and influencing positive change in the justice system with regards to discrimination.

“Justice for Stephen is about all of us, every one of us, in society having justice. There are still too many young people who do not have a sense of hope, who just don’t get the chance to live their dreams. I want all our children and young people to feel inspired, be confident and have hope in their own future. We are building hope but there is more to do.”
BARONESS LAWRENCE, SPEAKING AT 20TH ANNIVERSARY MEMORIAL IN 2013

Family and friends have since built up a legacy to support youth from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds. The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust through special programmes, has been able to help young people to see their potential. Gaining the skills and qualifications they need to progress to a higher standard of living for them and their families. “Our Transitions programme has supported over 1,000 young people who have received one–to–one advice, career guidance, industry talks and work experience.”.

In 2018 the campaign to create a national day to commemorate Stephen Lawrence’s life was granted by the prime minister Theresa May. This helped spread the message of Stephen’s story to people across the country. Inspiring young people to get involved in helping their local communities and focusing on bettering themselves for the future. We at SPC support this message of hope and equality and will give our full support to the charitable trust in their nationwide campaign.
